My Teaching Philosophy

This post is for an assignment, but I'm excited about it none the less because, lets be honest, I want to be a teacher, so it makes a lot of sense for me to share what I believe about teaching and about learning!

I believe that central to a successful learning experience is desire, companion to desire is curiosity.  Therefore as a teacher I must do all I can to encourage curiosity, inquiry, and wonder about the world, the past, present and future, the things we see and the things to small, to far, or non-concrete so that they elude our eyes. There is so much that is fascinating in the world and teachers, who I think are sometimes thought of as packagers, meant to fill students with everything they need to know, are instead, in my opinion, guides in an expedition of knowledge, and of the world we live in, with all its people, places, animals, ideas, forces, history, potential, and beyond that how microscopic it is in comparison with the immensity of space! I want my students more than anything to leave my classroom with that feeling about learning, a sense of adventure, a hunger and thirst for the sweet nectar of knowledge found in old books, peoples memories, in a laboratory, and outside in the open air. Once they have that foundational desire, I hope to give them the tools to start on a journey of self-sufficient, life-long learning.  That's not to say they won't need other people, other teachers, rather that they are able to be a teacher for themselves, and are able to seek out teachers and resources to help them fuel their passion throughout their continued journey. I think this individual power to self guide is essential because of the unique individuality of every student, their curiosity will lead them each to different and amazing places, which is wonderful because the world is forever in need of inventors, innovators, artists, musicians, leaders, thinkers, who will take society to places it never dreamed possible and achieve higher and mightier dreams than ever thought possible.  There is a quote I saw in a school that speaks so well to how I feel:

Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded.”- Jess Lair

I think that too often we want to shape children to become what we want them to become, when in reality, the only thing we can do is open them up to all possibilities and let them make an informed decision which path they will choose, which is what will happen anyway, though if you spend all your time shaping, and less time informing, tragically some will stop being molded, they will resist, and in the end still choose, but without the knowledge and understanding of themselves to choose well.  So let us teach them the wonderful, the awesome, the amazing, and the beautiful! When the time is right show them the contrast, the sad, the mistakes of the past, the conflict, the pain, and the hate.  Show them both and how each is obtained and let them choose.  I have faith in people, that they are good, the children are good and will choose well given the proper opportunity, and the world will be a better place for it.

Grey Matter

Doctorine & Covenants 109:8 "Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing, and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God;"

I was having a conversation with my friend last night, talking about decision making and te difficulties that sometimes arise during that process. He told me he normally sees his life very black and white, but for some reason in this situation there was just a lot of grey. He didn't understand why.

This got me thinking a lot because I've also felt a lot of grey lately: grey in my emotions, and grey in the thoughts I have about a lot of significant decisions I have ahead of me. As I've tried to come to y own conclusions for my personal struggles, I've had a lot of difficulty in figuring out what to do for myself. I was amazed then, when my friend came to ask for thoughts and advice with the exact type of issue, grey matter, that I had been mulling over for a few weeks, inspiration came almost immediately!

I told my friend, "You know I think there really is only black and white, the grey is only black and white that have just been jumbled up. You just need to sort through it, organize it into the black and the white. Either that or your grey, just needs more light in it."

Those two explanations of what "the grey" really is, either a mix of black and white, or white without enough light taught me a lot about the need to organize our lives, our thoughts about things, and the emotions that accompany them.

I also learned an important lesson from the fact that I wasn't able to figure out my  questions on my own. I didn't find an answer until I was helping someone else. I believe so much that we are supposed to be here for each other. Life is a team effort, a team sport. I think that's why God gave us families, maybe that's why he blesses us with friends who come into our lives.

So after all of this I had a chance to chat with another friend who helped me, a little forcefully, but with love, to stop accepting the grey that I saw and to start separating it so that I can move forward. It's amazing the light that you see and all the calm that sets in when the grey clouds are cleared out. I'm so blessed!

Sunshine and Stormclouds and Me

I discovered when I set up this blog that a few years ago I also had made a blog, however, I never once posted and completely forgot about it.  So here's to a new lease on blogging!

Disclosure:  I have been known to ramble, to geek out, to have unique opinions, to speculate, to cross examine issues from all angles, and really just think A LOT.  You have been forewarned.  Any of these or other habits may come out in these contemplations.

An explanation of the title:  First off, titles are really hard! How do you come up with a title for your life?  And how do you come up with a phrase that adequately encompasses who you are, the nature of your thoughts, your visions, hopes, dreams, aspirations, faith, short comings, trials, quirks, and everything else about you!? So there's that, but I think for now I am content.  Sunshine. One of my favorite things, both the word, its representations, implications, and literal manifestation. I love the association with the Sun, with Light, with Warmth, with Happiness, and all of the symbolic connections it has as well. Not to mention it has been a nickname for me from time to time.  Storm clouds. They are dark, at times scary, awe-inspiring, powerful, and beautiful in their own right.  Storm clouds are another favorite part of nature, and again very symbolic and representative of lots of different things which is why I think I liked it for my title.  The two together are a great pairing and balance for all of my life and the balance of everything that tends to go on.  The two in connection create beautiful sunrises, sunsets and skyscapes that leave me slack-jawed and in awe. I recognize the need for, and importance of having both the sunshine and the storm clouds in life and the beauty they form when they come together in divine design.

Me: I am, I believe, a relatively average person because I know that when you look at each person and get right down to it we all have bits of the same stuff in our lives.  We all have some things that are really generic, and others that are completely unique.  The mix is different for everyone, but the fact that we are all so individually dissimilar is what truly connects us all together.  I'm not average because I am the same, but I'm average because I know that I have my own set of differences that are entirely my own just like everyone else.  A few things about me: I am currently 22 years old.  I'm a college student, I love the color yellow, I enjoy learning and experiencing all kinds of new things, my favorite food is probably pizza, and I love that I'm a Mormon, and belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Along with that, I love also to learn about other people and their beliefs, their hope, and especially their dreams.  I think you can learn a lot about a person from their dreams, and I love to encourage people to reach for theirs, no matter how they might be, and also not to be afraid of setting their aspirations high to begin with.  Humans can accomplish miraculous things, and often the only thing standing in their way is themselves. So yeah, that's a little about me!
